Student Spotlight: Danielle Tryon – Mapping Alaska’s Marine Ecosystems Through Independent Research

Attention science enthusiasts! Join us for the third PWSC Environmental Sciences Symposium, which will feature student research on May 2, 2025. Danielle Tryon, a marine natural resources technician student, will present her work on Prince William Sound. Utilizing GIS and R statistical software, she will analyze environmental data to identify trends in sea surface temperatures and climate change impacts, collaborating with the Prince William Sound Science Center to share this information with educators, policymakers and the public.

Avery learned about PWSC through her high school counselor, Sue Reynolds, who had a poster showcasing the college and its outdoor leadership program. Drawn to the hands-on nature of the program, she decided to enroll, even though it meant starting in the middle of an Alaskan winter.

PWSC Supports Cordova Science Olympiad Team to Gold Medal Success and Advances Mariculture Education

Prince William Sound College proudly celebrates the Cordova middle school team's recent gold medal victory in the mariculture category at the Alaska Science Olympiad in Fairbanks. In collaboration with PWSC's Dr. Amanda Glazier, students gained hands-on experience in sustainable marine cultivation, preparing them for promising STEM careers. The event also spotlighted local connections, including Valdez native Jessica McKay’s mentorship at UAF. Looking ahead, PWSC continues to support STEM initiatives, including hosting the Valdez STEAM Fest in collaboration with Alaska Blue Economy Center and community partners.

PWSC and VHS students shine in SkillsUSA Alaska Competitions!

For the second consecutive year, Anthony Gerasch, marine technology instructor at PWSC, and Isaac Deaton, the career and technical education (CTE) teacher at Valdez High School (VHS), took their students to the 2025 State Leadership and Skills Conference hosted by SkillsUSA Alaska. This year, their students delivered exceptional performances, achieving top placements in marine service technology and power equipment technology.
