PWSC millwright instructor nominates student for NAWIC's Constructive Women's Award
by V Heisser |
At Prince William Sound College (PWSC), instructors work hard to create opportunities
for their students and strive to excel in their teaching. This commitment was highlighted
when Spencer Heston, assistant professor of millwright industrial technology, nominated
an exceptional student, Ashley Nova, for the Alaska Chapter of the National Association
of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Constructive Women's Award.
According to Tamie Taylor, Vice President of Construction at KOMAN Holdings, LLC,
this award recognizes the outstanding contributions of women in the Alaskan construction
industry. "We celebrate women in the industry—not only in the trades but also in every
aspect, from design to management. All of these roles are essential for successful
project completion. Women in Construction Week, an event celebrated nationwide, highlights
our impact on the industry and how women can help address the workforce shortage."
Heston acknowledged Ashley Nova's dedication and technical skills in a male-dominated
field and submitted her application to ensure her achievements were recognized. His
commitment to his students extends beyond the classroom, as he continuously seeks
ways to help them succeed.
Awards, scholarships, and mentorship are vital for empowering students—especially
women in the construction industry—by advancing their careers. These resources provide
valuable support, recognition, and guidance, helping to dismantle barriers in this
traditionally male-dominated field. Tamie Taylor encouraged anyone in a construction-related
industry to apply for scholarship opportunities.
