Embark on Adventure: PWSC's Kayak Capstone Expedition!
by Vicki Heisser |
PWSC's outdoor leadership students are gearing up for an exciting 14-day kayak expedition
from Whittier to Valdez as part of their capstone class project this academic year.
Dr. Benjamin Rush, assistant professor of outdoor leadership, and Carrie Abruzzo lead
this expedition, which the students plan and execute entirely.
The students have invested significant time and effort in organizing this venture,
from charting their course to procuring over 385 pounds of provisions and organizing
equipment. Dr. Rush thanks Dennis Humphrey, Shannon Stites, and Jay Stevens for their
invaluable contributions to the project. Furthermore, Dr. Rush would like to express
his appreciation to the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council for providing the grant funding that is being utilized for this expedition.
Participation in this course requires prior completion of rigorous training in Alaska
Backpacking, Wilderness First Responder, and Beginning Sea Kayaking. The students
are well-prepared to tackle the challenges, drawing on the knowledge and expertise
gained from these preparatory courses.
The expedition begins on Sunday, May 11, and is expected to end by May 24, with the
students returning to Valdez. We can track their progress and follow their journey
