During our recent interview with Lydia Worrall-Edie, she shared her decision to attend PWSC and become a resident assistant (RA). Lydia's interest in PWSC started after taking a backcountry skiing class at UAA taught by TJ Miller, who also teaches at PWSC. TJ recommended that she speak with Dr. Benjamin Rush, assistant professor of outdoor leadership, which sparked her interest in attending PWSC.
The Alaska Maritime Education Consortium (AMEC), in partnership with Yamaha, hosted a Yamaha Marine Maintenance Certification Program (MCP) Instructor training in Valdez, Alaska, Aug. 4-10, 2023. Yamaha provided two trainers to deliver the MCP certification to eleven instructors from the communities of Dillingham, Ketchikan, Soldotna, Juneau, Kodiak, Valdez, Kotzebue, Chevak, Kwigillingok, and Quinhagak. The instructors represented school districts, AMEC faculty, and representatives from the Coastal Villages Region Fund.
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote mental health and suicide prevention.
Emily Griffin is starting her second year at PWSC this fall and will complete the OEC in Marine Natural Resource Technician next spring. Her ultimate goal is to pursue a career in environmental science and conservation.

This summer, Charles Keeter participated in the PWSC's Small Engines for Teachers program, which led to his current endeavor: the Yamaha and AMEC train-the-trainer course. These classes ignited his enthusiasm as they focused on the AMEC program, designed to equip people with the essential skills for shipbuilding, vessel repair, maintenance, port operations, and vessel maneuvers. The ultimate aim is to prepare Alaskans for careers in these critical fields.
Leve Jones, a senior at Glennallen High School and a member of the Native Village of Tazlina and Naltsiine clan, recently participated in the Biota of Alaska class offered by PWSC. Leve shared that he joined the course to expand his knowledge about the native plants in his surroundings.
Dr. Amanda Glazier, assistant professor of environmental sciences, and Anthony Gerasch, instructor of marine technology, are working with the Alaska Blue Economy Center and the City of Valdez to conduct site assessments for potential kelp and oyster farms in the region.
