Professional development tailored to Alaska teachers...2024 For Teachers Courses at PWSC

by Vicki Heisser  |

Last week, Katie Bobowski, Dr. Bjørn Wolter, and Catherine Taylor Walker had an incredible time coordinating and teaching PWSC's Environmental Science For Teachers in Alaska! Their students had the opportunity to kayak on a glacial lake to learn about climate change, practice nature journaling in the temperate rainforest, and run intertidal transects while searching for microplastics in the waters of Orca Bay, among other activities.

The Resilient Food Systems for Teachers program starts today in Cordova. The program will focus on developing resilience in local food systems by covering topics such as native gardening, hydroponics, mariculture, composting, and low-effort farming. Participants will take part in field trips and collaborative learning to develop lessons that can be immediately implemented in their schools. Additionally, they will be provided with supplies for a basic hydroponic system.

Did you know that Alaska teachers can attend these courses for free during the summers of 2024-2026, thanks to grant funding? Tuition, academic fees, and housing are all covered, and there may be travel and food stipends available. Although classes are full for this summer, you can start planning for the coming years.
