Grant funding available to cover tuition and fees for eligible students in the one-semester program
VALDEZ, Alaska — September 29, 2026 — Prince William Sound College (PWSC) is relaunching its Construction Skills Occupational Endorsement Certificate (OEC) in Spring 2027, offering students an opportunity to gain practical construction and maintenance skills in just one semester. Grant funding is available to cover tuition and fees for eligible students.
The nine-credit program combines classroom instruction with hands-on training at PWSC's campus in Valdez. Designed for individuals interested in entering the construction trades, pursuing apprenticeship opportunities or developing skills for residential repair and maintenance, the program provides a practical starting point for a variety of career pathways.
Students will gain foundational skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical concepts, weatherization, building maintenance and jobsite safety. Through applied shop-based training, they will learn to use tools safely, complete basic repairs and apply construction concepts to real-world maintenance situations.
The program also introduces students to the business and professional knowledge associated with handyman work in Alaska, including licensing, bonding, insurance, building codes, estimating and customer service.
Preparing Students for Construction Careers in Alaska
The Construction Skills certificate is designed to help students develop skills they can put to work in entry-level construction, residential repair and facilities maintenance positions.
For those interested in self-employment, the program introduces the skills and professional requirements associated with pursuing an Alaska Handyman Contractor License.
Graduates may also use the certificate as a foundation for a four-year construction apprenticeship or continue their technical education at PWSC through programs such as Millwright or Marine Service Technology. Students interested in continuing their education can work with an academic advisor to explore pathways toward an Associate of Applied Science in Technology.
