Building connections through kayaking in Prince William Sound
by Vicki Heisser |
Assistant Professor of Outdoor Leadership Benjamin Rush, is having an adventurous
summer in Alaska. Fresh off a kayak capstone expedition, he's now immersed in planning
the rest of his summer kayaking trips. Rush is particularly excited about leading
several international travelers from Taiwan into Prince William Sound, showcasing
the area's stunning natural beauty.
Rush's connection to Taiwan is not just a passing phase. Before moving to Alaska,
he directed the outdoor leadership program at the University of Taiwan. His passion for the outdoors and his
desire to bridge cultures through shared experiences led him, PWSC, and his former
college in Taiwan to create unique travel experiences. This summer, their efforts
pay off as they successfully organize these trips for the first time, offering a one-of-a-kind
adventure.
Two planned non-credit kayaking trips are designed for intermediate-skilled kayakers.
The first 8-day course includes kayaking from Columbia Glacier to Sawmill, Jack Bay,
and Shoup Bay. The second trip is a 2-week journey from Whittier to Valdez.
Rush mentioned, "After those kayak trips, I'm heading to the National Outdoor Leadership
School (NOLS) for my final 2-week expedition. It's a customized course for graduate
students in a leadership program at the University of Mississippi."
PWSC and Rush are committed to providing memorable and enriching kayaking expeditions
in Alaska. They are also dedicated to outdoor education, cross-cultural exchange,
and building lasting connections between people and nature.
