Haason Scott

Last semester, PWSC student Haason Scott finished his internship at an independent senior facility in his home state of California. Now back in classes at PWSC, we got a chance to catch up with him to learn more about his experience.

During his internship, Haason served as an activities assistant. He explains, “When they did activities like exercise, when they had people come in and talk to them, I would help with the events. We researched what activities were appropriate for that age group. From there, it was really all about what some people were able to do.”

For Haason, this internship helped him to get a better sense for what he wants to pursue for his future career. “It actually helped me change my career path because I always wanted to open up my own small business, but I was unsure in what area or what field, but now I want to...have it somehow helping seniors. Helping seniors become more active and provide services to seniors who aren't receiving them.”

Haason doesn’t just want to work with seniors; he wants to help seniors who may not have the means to afford certain care facilities or programs. He shares, “I want to help people who do not have access. So I want to own my own business. I also want to receive my certificate as an activities professional, and then earn an activities directors certificate, and I'm only 80 hours from my activity professional certificate.”

During his internship, Haason learned a lot about people and how seemingly insignificant acts of kindness can be so important. “I learned that the smallest things can help people so much, especially the older you get. It’s the simple things that are important, especially to them. I really tried to put a smile on their faces...because you never know when somebody will be able to have that smile again or feel happy or feel loved. In the end it felt like everybody was just my grandpa and my grandma, and I was just going up to hang out with them.”

After such a wonderful internship experience, this semester Haason is taking classes that will help him as he continues to think about a future career working with others. “I am in the Recreation Program Planning and Evaluation class and the Leadership in Initiative Activities class. I am excited to be in these two classes. I am excited about the learning and growing that they’ll provide for me.”
