PWSC's Second Annual Environmental Sciences Symposium was a great success!

Five students - Hannah Bogdan, Teag Panzer, Luke Stein, J. L. Chapin, and Frank Schweers - presented their independent research projects, which were made possible through the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council and Alaska Mariculture Cluster funding. Each student's presentation offered a unique perspective on pressing environmental issues, from exploring biofouling on oyster farms at the VNT Research and Educational Mariculture site to investigating the impact of Whitetail expansion.

Summer course offered: HUM A220 - Film as/and Literature

Join HUM A220 - Film as/and Literature and explore the fascinating world where literature and the silver screen meet. This 3-credit course delves into the relationship between literature and film. It examines how narratives, characters, themes, and motifs are presented in these two mediums. The course covers various materials, such as classic novels, contemporary short stories, plays, and films. In particular, it will focus on the theme of domestic violence as depicted in film and literature.

Student spotlight: Brittany Kuzma

PWSC student Brittany Kuzma is the epitome of determination and persistence. Born and raised in Eagle River, Alaska, Brittany has faced and overcome complex challenges, including a severe brain injury that affected her ability to walk and talk. Through years of rehabilitation and support from family and friends, she persevered and is now in college, focused and thriving. Brittany is pursuing an Occupational Endorsement in Marine Natural Resources Technician program and is fully immersed in her classes.

PWSC supports mariculture research and development

Prince William Sound College supports mariculture research and development through partnerships with the Alaska Mariculture Cluster, The University of Alaska Fairbanks Alaska Blue Economy Center (ABEC), the City of Valdez, and the Teaching Through Technology (T3) Alliance. ABEC's associate director, Tommy Sheridan, recently held a week of mariculture activities and workshops for PWSC and Valdez High School students.

Dr. Melissa Kjelvik's course teaches practical mariculture skills to prepare individuals for the industry. Over spring break, she took her students to work with the experienced team at Alutiiq Pride Marine Institute (APMI), a leading organization in Alaskan mariculture initiatives for over thirty years.

Student spotlight: Frank Schweers

Frank Schweers is an outdoor leadership student interning at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. He is working on an independent research project with Dr. Amanda Glazier and interpreting data for the Chugach Regional Ocean Monitoring (CROM) database. The data was collected by Tribal citizen scientists and volunteers for the Alutiiq Pride Marine Institute of CRRC.
