From Alaska Roots to Nursing Dreams: Kendra Duran’s Journey of Care and Determination
by V Heisser |
Kendra Duran, a nursing student at UAA–PWSC, brings both Alaska roots and an Idaho
home base to her journey into healthcare. Born in Alaska, she grew up in Idaho before
moving back to Alaska eight years ago. After returning, she worked in construction
as a Traffic Control Supervisor and an office assistant before beginning nursing school.
Now, as she pursues her degree, her path reflects both determination and a deep connection
to the state where her story began.
Kendra chose nursing because she genuinely loves helping people—and because the medical
field is always evolving, offering constant opportunities to learn and grow. She was
drawn to the challenge and the idea that a healthcare career never stands still. For
her, nursing isn’t just a job, but a path of lifelong learning.
She credits the UAA-PWSC program's smaller cohort size as a major benefit, enabling
more hands-on learning, more practice time, and closer connections with instructors.
That kind of learning environment has helped her build confidence and sharpen her
skills in a meaningful, supportive setting.
Balancing a rigorous nursing program with family life isn’t easy, but Kendra is quick
to acknowledge the support system that makes it possible. With help from her husband,
sister, and aunt—who step in to care for her children while she studies—she’s able
to stay focused on her goals without losing sight of her role as a mom.
For others considering a career change, Kendra’s advice is simple and encouraging:
if it’s something you’re passionate about, go for it—but make sure you have a strong
support system around you. When she does find moments of free time, you’ll likely
find her outside snowboarding, fishing, or hiking—recharging in the places that keep
her grounded as she works toward her future in nursing.
