Adventure and Connection: Hunter Henrie’s PWSC Story
by V. Heisser |
Hunter Henrie's journey to Prince William Sound College (PWSC) started with a simple
Google search. “I was looking for fun jobs in the woods,” he says. That search led
him to work in Washington and Alaska, including a few years in Cooper Landing. When
he decided to pursue a degree in outdoor education, another search brought him to
PWSC. “I clicked the link and knew this was the place for me,” he recalls.
Now in his second semester studying Outdoor Leadership, Hunter is thrilled by the
hands-on approach. “I thought it would be mostly lectures, but instructor Benjamin
Rush really shines in the field. Every weekend, there’s an excursion, and it’s amazing,”
he says.
Hunter also lives in the dorms and is one of three resident assistants (RAs). Encouraged
by his previous RAs, he applied and quickly took to the role. “A good RA wants everyone
to have a good time,” he explains. “Sometimes it’s helping someone keep their music
down; other times, it’s planning a movie night or an ice cream social to bring people
together.”
This semester, Hunter and the RAs have hosted ice cream socials, movie nights, and
Fry Bread Fridays, and are planning a Halloween door-decorating contest. He emphasizes
inclusion and connection in all activities. “Even a simple hello or asking someone
about their day can make a big difference,” he says.
Hunter combines his love of adventure with a commitment to community, showing that
leadership isn’t just about skills—it’s about being present, listening, and helping
others feel seen.
