Finding Strength and Sharing It: Sarah Henton's Journey at the PWSC Health & Fitness Center
by V. Heisser |
At the Health & Fitness Center of Prince William Sound College, Sarah Henton greets
everyone with a warm smile. Her role extends beyond checking people in; she is a fitness
instructor and personal trainer dedicated to helping others embark on their health
journeys.
Now in her second year at PWSC, Sarah teaches several classes. She offers Chair Fitness,
a free program for the community every Monday and Wednesday at 10 a.m., along with
credit courses in Kettlebell Training and HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training).
In her kettlebell class, participants work through 50-second intervals with short
breaks. Her HIIT class consists of circuits, cycling through four exercises for seven
minutes at a time, totaling 16 different exercises. “It’s challenging,” Sarah says,
“but people surprise themselves with what they can do.”
Sarah’s passion for fitness stems from her personal journey. A few years ago, she
weighed 225 pounds, took multiple medications, and faced significant health challenges.
Encouraged by her doctor, she hired a personal trainer, made lifestyle changes, and
lost 80 pounds within a year.
“That’s what motivates me,” Sarah shares. “I want to help people feel confident in
their abilities.”
As a mother of two young girls, her desire to be active and involved drives her commitment
to being involved. “I didn’t want to miss out on being part of their memories,” she
explains.
Sarah emphasizes meeting clients at their individual comfort levels and celebrating
their progress. “If you push too hard, too soon, people can shut down,” she notes.
“It’s all about support.”
For Sarah, fitness is about resilience and creating a healthier life. At PWSC’s Health
& Fitness Center, she inspires others to start their own transformative journeys.
