Spring break didn’t slow down students in Intermediate Ice Climbing at Prince William
Sound College—they took learning outdoors in Keystone Canyon.
The week began with gear checks, layering systems, and safety reviews—because on the
ice, every harness, rope, and tool matters. Midweek, students practiced placing ice
screws, building anchors, and working with multi-pitch rope systems under the guidance
of instructors August Franzen and Lauren Brand.
In the final days, teams rotated between climbing Mudslide and Fang Gully, putting
their skills into action on real routes. By the end of the week, every student had
tackled both classic lines, combining technique, teamwork, and confidence in one of
Alaska’s most dramatic outdoor classrooms.
Hands-on experiences like this show the unique opportunities across UAA’s community
campuses, where learning can happen anywhere—from the lab to the canyon.
