Another Strong Showing for PWSC at SkillsUSA Alaska
For the third year in a row, instructor Anthony Gerasch Jr. brought students to compete at SkillsUSA Alaska—and once again, they delivered.
SkillsUSA Alaska is part of SkillsUSA, a national organization that brings together students, educators, and industry professionals to promote excellence in career and technical education. The annual competition challenges students to demonstrate their skills through hands-on, real-world scenarios across a wide range of fields, including marine service technology, power equipment, and professional skills like job interviewing. These events are designed to reflect the expectations of the workplace—testing not only technical ability, but also problem-solving, communication, and composure under pressure.
This year, the following Prince William Sound College students placed, continuing a strong tradition of hands-on skill, focus, and workforce readiness:
- Ayşe Macknight – 2nd place, Marine Service Technology; 3rd place, Power Equipment; 3rd place, Job Interview
- David Buck – 3rd place, Marine Service Technology
- Monica Merlau – 1st place, Job Interview; 2nd place, Power Equipment
- Tristan Taylor – 1st place, Marine Service Technology; 1st place, Power Equipment
Competitions like SkillsUSA Alaska play an important role in preparing students for careers. By applying what they’ve learned in the classroom to practical, timed challenges, students gain valuable experience and confidence while building skills that employers are actively seeking. Many events are supported by industry professionals, helping ensure students are meeting current workforce standards and making meaningful connections in their fields.
PWSC is proud of these students for the work they’ve put in and for representing the college so well.
