Nursing Students Practice Implanted Port Access in Lab
by V. Heisser |
Today in the nursing lab, two students demonstrated the procedure for accessing an
implanted port. Each student took a turn being the nurse and assisting.
The scenario involved a patient needing IV access for medications and nutrition. The
nursing student verified the patient’s name and date of birth, assessed the patient's
condition, and explained the procedure before proceeding.
The students demonstrated the ability to maintain sterile technique, check for blood
return, flush the line with saline, and secure the line with a sterile dressing. They
also explained how medications, IV fluids, and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) can
be safely administered through the port.
Both students showed strong communication, safety checks, and proper sterile technique
throughout the demonstration.
