For Teachers Summer Professional Development

by Vicki Heisser  |

During the month of June, over 65 teachers from across the state attended PWSC's “For Teachers" courses in Valdez and Cordova. "For Teachers" courses help educators incorporate place-based and experiential learning ideas into their curriculum, build lesson plans that achieve the Alaska Standards, and much more.

Courses included Cross-Disciplinary STEM, Space Math, Programming for Teachers, Integrated and Applied Science, Environmental Science and Natural Resources.

For Solomon Afcan, the Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Math teacher for 6th-12th grade students in Nunam Iqua, his participation in the Environmental Science and Natural Resources courses were “an incredible learning experience. The field activities, and also learning from my colleagues, will allow me to create many placed-based and traditional knowledge lessons for my students. The rural schools have little-to-nothing in the way of science materials, and these courses opened my eyes to a broad array of possibilities. I’ve gained many takeaways for use in my classroom. I’m excited.”

An Ecology is scheduled for July 31 – August 6, 2022. To find out more about PWSC’s “For Teacher” courses visit: https://pwsc.alaska.edu/4teachers/ or Contact: Katie Bobowski, at 907-822-3673 or ksbobowski@alaska.edu .
