Charting the Course: Outdoor Leadership Students Prepare for Their Capstone Journey
by V. Heisser |
Today, outdoor leadership students gathered to begin planning their capstone kayaking
expedition, scheduled for early May. The trip will take them by sea from Valdez to
Whittier, followed by a ferry ride back—an ambitious journey that marks the culmination
of their program.
Now in its sixth year, the outdoor leadership capstone alternates annually between
sea-based and land-based expeditions. One year, students build skills and leadership
on the water through long-distance kayaking; the next, they head into the mountains
for a mountaineering experience, including a Denali climbing expedition. This structure
reflects the heart of the program—preparing students to lead confidently in both coastal
and alpine environments.
Adding to the excitement, former outdoor leadership student Ryan Tulloch joined the
group to share a presentation from his own capstone kayaking trip two years ago. Hearing
firsthand stories, lessons learned, and reflections from someone close to their age
made the journey feel more real—and more achievable—for current students.
