Student Spotlight: From Virginia to Alaska—A journey of rediscovering a love for learning
Meet Kinaire Callahan, one of our inspiring natural resources technician (NRT) and marine natural resource technician (MNRT) students whose path to higher education was anything but traditional. Originally from Virginia, Kinaire left high school just two days into her senior year, feeling disillusioned with the education system and eager for hands-on experiences. After earning a GED, she spent several years working seasonal jobs, including time in Alaska, before realizing she wanted something more.
That "something more" was the NRT program at our small college, where she found a welcoming and supportive environment. With support from student services, Kinaire navigated the application process by gathering transcripts, securing references, and applying for grant funding that covered her tuition and housing costs. The program's hands-on approach and close-knit learning environment were precisely what she needed to reignite her passion for learning.
Since enrolling, Kinaire has immersed herself in conservation, Alaskan ecology, forestry, and oceanography courses. One of her favorite classes is the drone course, where she learns about airspace regulations, weather interpretation, and aviation sectionals to prepare for FAA certification. These skills open doors to careers in natural resource management and aviation, which she is seriously considering.
As graduation approaches, she is exploring internships in geological technology and environmental science, hoping to stay in Alaska for the summer. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but it has been transformative—proving that education doesn’t have to follow a straight path to be meaningful.
You might find Kinaire picking up her banjo or harmonica when she's not studying, adding a personal soundtrack to her Alaskan adventure.
