July has been a busy month for National Parks Service (NPS) intern Sarah King. So far, she’s completed GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographic Information System ) training [and] learned how to use survey grade equipment for field data collection.”

Beyond training, she also participated in and planned backpacking trips where she was responsible for “the logistics, gear, communications, and backcountry itinerary.”  For King, backpacking in the “intense, unforgiving, and breathtaking” Alaskan wilderness was “a wonderful experience.”

King also had a chance to work with rangers in the Donoho Basin, where she helped install signs related to bear safety. Of her time working with the NPS, whether training, backpacking, or maintaining areas for backpackers, King says she is “grateful” for the various experiences she’s had with the parks service.
