Alumni spotlight: Sean Mueller
by V. Heisser |
Sean Mueller, a graduate of the OEC in Natural Resources Technician and Marine Natural Resources Technician programs at Prince William Sound College (PWSC), is returning to Alaska from California
to present his research at the Alaska Marine Science Symposium in Anchorage next week.
He reflected on his time at PWSC, saying, “My experience was incredibly fulfilling.
The supportive community and engaging curriculum were vital to my growth. I felt my
work made a real impact.”
Sean focused his research on developing lab methods for kelp farming in Valdez. He
established a connection with the Native Village of Eyak and tested methods of shipping kelp between the two communities. This was his first
independent research project. He remarked, “It was a significant challenge, but an
incredible opportunity to apply what I learned in real-world situations.”
He highly recommends PWSC: "The culture encourages collaboration, and everyone is
genuinely invested in your success. The community is unparalleled, with events and
housing that help students connect.”
Initially hesitant about moving to Valdez, Sean quickly found the tight-knit community
and outdoor access made it feel like home. “The outdoors was right outside my door,
and the locals made me feel welcomed and supported.”
As he prepares for the symposium, Sean is excited to return to Alaska, which has significantly
influenced his academic journey and appreciation for its marine and natural resources.
