Join us at the 2025 Valdez Theatre Conference!

by Dawson Moore  |

We have been eagerly anticipating this! The Valdez Theatre Conference features performances on the main stage of the Civic Center, and they are free for the public to attend.

Tuesday, June 10, at 8:00 p.m., the Midnight Summit Ensemble presents Kristen Ritter’s historical comedy Blanche Stuart Scott. It’s 1910 and Blanche decides she must become one of the first women to drive across the entire country, and nothing—not outlaws, not girl scouts, not even Gertie, her cynical reporter companion for the journey—will prevent her from going down in the history books. This historical-ish comedy about the literal lengths women must go to be recognized in their time is directed by Kalli Denali Randall and features four of the finest actors in Alaska.

Thursday, June 12, at 8:00 p.m., the Conference presents the Daisy Ridley-starring film Sometimes I Think About Dying, the story of a socially awkward office worker who spends most of her time in isolation and daydreams of her own death until a new colleague pricks the bubble of her own isolation. It is based on Kevin Armento’s play killers, which was first presented in Valdez in the 2013 Play Lab. Kevin will speak before the play, and additional material from the play will be presented during the film by the initial reading’s Jill Sowerwine.

On Saturday, June 14, there are two daytime presentations. At 1:00 p.m., the Monologue Workshop will feature over 30 performers presenting the product of their week’s study, one-minute monologues written by the playwrights participating in this year’s Play Lab. At 2:30 p.m., the Ten-Minute Play Slam will present six short plays in a staged reading format. Both of these performances are invariably awesome and fun and a great way to spend an afternoon in the theatre.
