Student spotlight: Kungcheng Wang

Kungcheng Wang, also known as "KC," is the executive director of Chimestone Media CO, LTD, a company based in Taipei, Taiwan. The company focuses on using media to share experiences and tell stories. KC has a keen interest in adventure and seeks his own experiences.

Last summer, after completing the ACA Coastal Kayak L2 Instructor Training with Dr. Benjamin Rush, assistant professor of outdoor leadership at PWSC, KC was invited to bring some friends on a kayaking trip in Valdez, Alaska. Rush contacted him about an eight-day non-credit kayaking venture, and as KC says, "Without hesitation, I agreed to start planning…"

KC and his classmates went on an eight-day kayaking adventure through Prince William Sound, paddling through Columbia Glacier, Sawmill Bay, Jack Bay, and Shoup Bay. Navigating the scenic waters and experiencing the unique challenges of the expedition was an incredible experience for KC. KC shared, "If life is a series of tests, this eight-day sea kayak adventure is filled with surprises and challenges."

"On the first day in Valdez, I felt relaxed and confident in Ben's expertise. However, Ben's meticulous attention to detail soon made me realize the complexities of this trip. Adapting to Alaskan weather, tides, and wilderness camping was a new challenge. From tent placement to bear safety, every detail required learning and adjustment.

The biggest challenge was eight days without showers and practicing Leave No Trace (LNT) principles. Bathing in a glacial stream was an unforgettable experience, highlighting the majesty of nature.

The glaciers' ancient grandeur profoundly impacted me, reminding me of nature's power and beauty. The support from PWSC was invaluable, ensuring our success under Ben and Rafael's guidance. This journey was a pure, spiritual experience, and I look forward to returning to Valdez and reconnecting with its pristine nature. Thank you, Benjamin Rush, Rafael Alfaro, and PWSC! See you soon."

KC no doubt has many stories to tell from his experience, and we look forward to having him back again for more adventures!
