Student spotlight: Joseph Williams
by Vicki Heisser |

When Joseph was in his mid-twenties, he attended night classes at Prince William Sound College in Glennallen while running his own business and being married with a family. Despite facing numerous challenges, he made the dean's list after his first semester. Joseph still keeps the certificate as a reminder of his accomplishments.
Over several decades, Joseph's life took many different turns. Initially, he planned to return to college, but he could not do so due to circumstances beyond his control. Instead, he decided to pursue a career as a professional hairstylist instructor, drawing on his 17 years of experience as a vocationally trained hairdresser. To become an instructor, he had to complete 1,650 hours of training to become a licensed hairstylist, pass a test, and do a presentation and demonstration, all of which he accomplished. After some time, Joseph returned to college, realizing that not knowing something was not an excuse, as there were always opportunities to gain knowledge.
Joseph has found returning to school intimidating and believes others may feel the same way. He has experienced difficulties adjusting to a new town, with increased living expenses and a substantial college workload. He appreciates the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere of the campus community, especially connecting with professors. "I prefer asking questions in person rather than via email, and I find the professors highly knowledgeable and engaging."
Joseph has set a goal: "I want an employable skill right after graduation, and it's not just about getting a degree." He has already received a job offer from a forestry worker in the Copper River Valley. Joseph Williams is on the path toward acquiring new knowledge and changing his life. Education is one of his passions, and he strongly advocates for it.
