Student spotlight: Avery Cathey

Avery Cathey is a student from Homer, Alaska, currently enrolled in the outdoor leadership program at Prince William Sound College (PWSC). She graduated early from Homer Flex High School, which offers an alternative learning environment. She chose this program to deepen her understanding of the outdoors while exploring potential career paths in law enforcement or wildland firefighting.

Avery learned about PWSC through her high school counselor, Sue Reynolds, who had a poster showcasing the college and its outdoor leadership program. Drawn to the hands-on nature of the program, she decided to enroll, even though it meant starting in the middle of an Alaskan winter.

Despite the challenging conditions, Avery has found her experience incredibly rewarding. She particularly enjoyed her mountaineering class, where she successfully summited Little Odyssey. Additionally, Avery has completed courses in Wilderness First Responder, winter camping, crevasse rescue, beginning cross-country skiing, and beginner ice climbing. Although the Wilderness First Responder course has been challenging, she considers it one of the most valuable parts of her training.

Avery's time in the program has provided her with an opportunity to reflect on her passions and future goals. As she looks ahead, she is increasingly inclined towards a career in law enforcement or firefighting—fields where her outdoor skills and leadership training can be meaningful.

Outside of school, Avery is passionate about spending time in nature. She enjoys hiking, skiing, snow machining, paddle boarding, and fishing, which reflects her deep connection to the Alaskan outdoors and her adventurous spirit.
