Highlights from the 2025 PWSC Sea Kayaking Symposium in Valdez, Alaska
by V. Heisser |
We are excited to celebrate the success of the first PWSC Sea Kayaking Symposium,
held from May 9 to 12 in Valdez, Alaska.
Nineteen participants and seven instructors enjoyed four days of hands-on kayaking
training — which exceeded our expectations. We plan to host this event annually!
Valdez is perfect with its calm glacial waters, stunning mountains, and close community.
Benjamin Rush, assistant professor of outdoor leadership at PWSC, aimed to create
a local alternative to large kayaking events. This vision became a reality with the
help of dedicated instructors and professionals.
Our talented instructors included Jeff Atkins, Brian McGorry, Paul Nylund, Sarah Kearns,
Rafael Alfaro, Carrie Abruzzo, Anmar Hernandez, and Benjamin Rush.
They provided a friendly environment for paddlers of all levels.
Key Activities Included:
• ACA Level 2 Instructor Certification Course
Taught by Jeff Atkins and Brian McGorry — fully booked!
• Three-Day Guided Paddle to Shoup Bay
Carrie Abruzzo and Anamar Hernandez
• ACA Level 2 Skills Courses
Led by Sarah Kearns and Rafael Alfaro
• Pool Sessions for Rescue and Rolling Techniques
Led by Paul Nylund
• Day Trips to Gold Creek
Rafael Alfaro
• Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Recertification Course
Held May 7–8, before the main event
Several participants earned their ACA Level 2 Instructor Certification, increasing
the number of certified leaders in Alaska's paddling community.
Reflecting on our first symposium, we feel grateful.
The PWSC Sea Kayaking Symposium has fostered a growing community of paddlers, educators,
and adventurers — all dedicated to safety, access, and exploration.
Here’s to many more years of sea kayaking in Valdez!
