Trekking on Root and Kennecott Glaciers
by Vicki Heisser |
The KIN 287 Leadership and Outdoor Recreation class, under the guidance of Benjamin
Rush, assistant professor of outdoor leadership, and Megan Renz, a Kennicott Wilderness
guide, went on a four-day adventure to McCarthy, Alaska.
This unique learning environment, tailored for second-year students, was a perfect
setting to master back-country navigation. Despite unexpected weather challenges,
the group adapted by trekking across the Root and Kennicott glaciers, bypassing their
original fly-in plan. Armed with lightweight gear and advanced camping techniques,
the students covered 12-15 miles of rugged terrain.
This expedition was a test of endurance and a unique opportunity to elevate their
camping and outdoor skills in one of the most stunning and demanding environments
imaginable, inspiring them to push their limits.
