In Memoriam: Dr. Dan O’Connor
It is with heartfelt appreciation and a profound sense of loss that we honor Dr. Dan O’Connor, who retired in July 2022 after eight impactful years as president and campus director of Prince William Sound College. What began as a six-month interim role in 2014 became a lasting legacy of leadership, vision, and service.

Under Dr. O’Connor’s steady guidance, PWSC joined the University of Alaska Anchorage system and expanded programs such as Millwright, Marine Services, nursing, the Valdez Theatre Conference, and dual-enrollment opportunities for high school students in Valdez, Glennallen, and Cordova. He also fostered strong partnerships with local organizations, including the Valdez Fisheries Development Association, Alyeska Pipeline, Providence Alaska, and the U.S. Coast Guard, strengthening the college’s ties to the region it serves.
Known for his unwavering support of students and staff, Dr. O’Connor was, in the words of Assistant Director, Academic and Student Affairs Shannon Stites, “the heart of PWSC.” She recalls his tireless advocacy for fully-funded dual credit programs and his connection with every employee. “He knows all of our families… he is much more than a boss.”

That same personal investment extended to the broader community. Whether volunteering at the food bank, supporting local sports, or attending city meetings, Dr. O’Connor was always present—representing the college with humility and care.

Faculty and staff echo the same sentiment. “Dan has integrity, honesty, humility, and clear focus,” said Dr. Benjamin Rush. “Much of what we’ve built is because of his leadership.” And longtime assistant Dawson Moore shared, “Dan is my favorite boss, and it’s not even close. I’m grateful for the steadying leadership he’s provided PWSC.”

Dr. O’Connor leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and community. His impact on PWSC, the University of Alaska, and the town of Valdez will be felt for years to come.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Thank you, Dr. O’Connor.
