Alumni Spotlight: Jared Humphrey, Millwright
by Vicki Heisser |
Having graduated from PWSC’s Millwright program in May 2021, Jared Humphrey is now working for Hecla Greens Creek Mine in Juneau, AK.
He first heard about Hecla Greens from millwright instructor Dennis Eastman, and he applied for a paid internship. Now as an employee, Humphrey is gaining a lot of valuable experience as part of the building maintenance crew.
As Humphrey explains, “I am on rotation currently and it has been very busy. I am now officially on the building maintenance crew, which is responsible for all the buildings on the island. I’m getting a wide variety of experiences on this crew; lots of plumbing, carpentry, and construction work, as well as maintaining things smaller like appliances and showers.”
Once a month, they close down the mill for repairs, and Humphrey and the rest of the crew go to work. For Humphrey, the most interesting part of his job so far has been replacing the liner inside of the ball mill.
He shares, “We had to crawl inside through a small opening in the front and pull out all of the old rubber liners. It was hard work, but it was a great experience.”
