From the Classroom to the Field

Sometimes the best way to learn what comes next is to hear from someone who has already
been there.
Today, Outdoor Leadership students heard from graduate Evan Clupper and current students
Majka Westlake, Franklin Westlake, Ben Hall, Ian Lingard, and Ruby Rivas about their
internship experiences.
Evan interned with Alaska Mountaineering School; Franklin and Ben spent the summer
with Pangaea Adventures; Ian worked with the Copper River Watershed Project; Majka
was with Robe River LLC; and Ruby was with Temsco Helicopter.
While their internships differed, they shared something important. Each position let
them work outside and use the skills and knowledge they developed through the Outdoor
Leadership program.
Hearing directly from their peers helps students see how what they are learning in
class can translate into real jobs and experiences. It also gives them a chance to
ask questions, hear what worked, learn from challenges, and get a better idea of the
many directions an outdoor leadership education can take them.
Sometimes it helps to hear, “I did this,” from someone who was sitting in the same
classroom not long ago.
