Employee spotlight: Spencer Heston

by Vicki Heisser  |

We are thrilled to introduce Spencer Heston, our new millwright instructor at PWSC. Spencer was born in Valdez and raised in an abandoned mining town, bringing a wealth of personal and professional experience to his role. Spencer has diverse experience in emergency response roles and holds a degree in industrial technology. He is family-oriented and enjoys outdoor activities with his daughters. Before joining our team, Spencer gained experience in business development and the construction and maintenance industries.

Spencer shared his background in mechanics, starting with Legos before progressing to working on bikes and snowmobiles. He received millwright training in high school and graduated from the industrial technology program at Prince William Sound Community College. He then worked as a millwright and a fire rescue member.

Later, he supported Skycrane operations and engaged in project management for commercial framing. He joined a stateside commercial construction sales organization, where he contributed to their expansion into the metal and concrete industry.

With years of experience as an instructor at an international disaster response academy, Spencer developed various learning models to navigate different cultures and languages, especially when collaborating with multiple agencies during emergency management leadership situations in the southeastern United States.

When asked about his teaching strategies, Spencer mentioned using Jim Kwik's Limitless techniques, modeling SpaceX's interactives, and years of in-field adaptation from other mentors and teachers to unlock the hidden superhero inside us.

Spencer is dedicated to maintaining the millwright program's highest safety and efficiency standards. As a Native American and member of the Valdez Native Tribe, he aims to enhance Alaska's workforce by providing industrial technology training for millwrights and promoting innovation for the state's next generation, supporting diverse cultural unity. He also advocates for continuous self-development and adaptation to a dynamic world.

Welcome to our team, Spencer!
