Sexual Assault Awareness and Action Month
by Sam Foist-Swart, Sam Foist-Swart |
Each year, PWSC joins the national conversation in honoring April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Action Month (#SAAM2020). Why do we bring awareness during this month? Does sexual assault happen in our communities? Unfortunately, we know it does:
-
1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed, 2.8% attempted).1
-
About 3% of American men—or 1 in 33—have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.1
-
47% of transgender people are sexually assaulted at some point in their lifetime.2
-
Almost 75% of Alaskans have experienced or know somone who has experienced domestic violence or sexual assault.3
It’s on all of us to create a safe, healthy, and fun community- free of violence!
