Student spotlight: Frank Schweers

Frank Schweers is an outdoor leadership student interning at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. He is working on an independent research project with Dr. Amanda Glazier and interpreting data for the Chugach Regional Ocean Monitoring (CROM) database. The data was collected by Tribal citizen scientists and volunteers for the Alutiiq Pride Marine Institute of CRRC.

Student spotlight: Calvin George

Calvin George was invited to the 2024 Mariculture Conference of Alaska in Anchorage, where he presented a poster about a mobile processing fleet for the mariculture industry. The idea came from listening to the challenges others face in the industry and wanting to find a solution. Calvin believes that the mariculture industry has the potential to make history and sees the mobile processing fleet as a way to address the processing and product development struggles faced by many.

Graduate spotlight: Lysette Doran

Lysette Doran recently completed her OEC in Marine Services Technology and has spent the last month working on Zwerver, a steel sailing barge. For Lysette, this has been a great experience full of learning, and she has been able to apply the knowledge she has gained in real-world situations.

Hannah Bogdan has been conducting independent research this academic year. She took two marine natural resource technician students, Jane and Brittany, on a boat field trip to the oyster farm between Shoup Bay and Gold Creek to promote hands-on learning.

Chugachmiut’s ACE Program

Chugachmiut’s ACE program serves Native youth living in the Chugach region, including the communities of Seward, Cordova, Valdez, Nanwalek, Port Graham, Tatitlek, and Chenega in grades K-12 who are enrolled in either public school, homeschool or private school. Their program works to provide funding support to these youth to be able to access educational opportunities.
