Employee spotlight: Carl Oberg
by Vicki Heisser |
Carl Oberg's journey began in Chicago, but his career has taken him to various corners
of the United States. Carl's career has been quite diverse, from Washington, DC, where
he worked in military contracting and international arms sales, to his role as a trade
specialist with the U.S. Department of Commerce. Alongside his professional endeavors,
he has lived in New York, Atlanta, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and Minneapolis
over the past 14 years. During this time, he has primarily focused on his role as
a nonprofit corporation executive, overseeing operations and finance for charities
of various sizes.
In September 2022, they moved to Valdez so that his wife could become the Curator
of Exhibits at the Valdez Museum. Carl is an accounting, finance, and operations expert
with numerous nonprofits nationwide.
Carl and his wife, Caren, are active members of the Valdez community. You might spot
them around town, walking their beloved mixed German Shepherd, Ginny, or enjoying
outdoor activities like hiking and cross-country skiing. Carl's commitment to the
community is further demonstrated through his roles as a Valdez Consortium Library
Advisory Board member and Valdez #4 Masonic Lodge member.
He is teaching Business Foundations this fall and hopes the students come away with
a good understanding of how business is structured in America and how it fits within
the context of our culture and economy. His particular focus on nonprofits will offer
the students insight into what is a significant but sometimes overlooked engine of
growth. Nonprofits comprise 10% of the workforce and 5.7% of America's GDP.
