Meet the students: Amber Major

Recent high school graduate Amber Major has set her sights on an Associate of Arts degree at PWSC. With an interest in criminal justice, Major is taking an Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies this semester, along with Writing and the Professions, Small Group Communication, and Physical Geology. When she isn’t hard at work pursuing her degree, Amber is busy in her new position as Prevention Coordinator at Advocates for Victims of Violence (AVV). When asked about what motivated her to work with AVV, Amber shares, “It's…just a great place with people who want to care for the community, come together. And I admired that, and wanted to be a part of that.”

In her new position, Amber is involved in many prevention programs. She explains, “I coordinate and assist with the design and implementation of the Prevention Programs such as Girls on the Run and Let Me Run.”

Even though she is hard at work in her new job, she is still thinking with ideas toward the future. “One of the things I would like to work on is combating human trafficking. And this job from my resources in Valdez is a great way up into the social work chain.”

While school and work take up most of her time, Amber still makes time to explore and enjoy the natural beauty of Valdez by biking and hiking around town. Having lived most of her life here in Valdez, Amber knows some great outdoor spots. She shares, “I love the Goat Trail, Homestead road, and the Dock Point area. Valdez is pretty in general. I can't really pick a favorite place. Everywhere you go is pretty.”
