The Alpha Psi Gamma chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society once again brought back awards for their service efforts in 2016. Our officer president Emillie Ficek and vice president Junaid Khan, tied for 1st place with Tacoma Community College for the Distinguished Chapter Officer Team Award. This award was based on their year-round activities and service projects. In addition, Emillie received 2nd place for Distinguished Chapter Officer Award. Emillie collaborated with the Valdez High School Honors Society to implement the Empty Bowl event in spring of last year. This event brought in more funds for the Valdez Food Bank than any previous Empty Bowl projects.

Junaid Khan has been named a 2017 Coca-Cola New Century Scholar. This program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, with additional support provided by the American Association of Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa. Selection was based on the score earned in the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition, for which more than 1,800 applications were received this year. Nominations were evaluated on academic achievement, leadership, service and significant endeavors. New Century Scholars represent the top scoring students from each state.

As a Coca-Cola New Century Scholar, Junaid will be recognized at the Phi Theta Kappa’s Presidents Breakfast held during the American Association of Community College’s Annual Convention and receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Foundation and Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.
